New Legislation and Rising Security Threats Prompt WorldSafe to Urge Action from Regulated Industries
With workplace violence and regulatory scrutiny on the rise, WorldSafe is
urging facility directors and compliance executives across regulated sectors to strengthen
their security and emergency preparedness programs.
Recent laws—including California’s SB 553, which mandates workplace violence prevention
programs—have sparked a wave of legislative momentum nationwide. Similar proposals in
Washington, New York, and Oregon aim to enforce comprehensive threat assessments, staff
training, and workplace safety protocols.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, workplace homicides increased by nearly
9% in 2023, and violent incidents across regulated sectors—including healthcare, logistics,
education, and manufacturing—have surged by 25% in five years.
“The risk environment has shifted. Security is no longer optional, and compliance is just the
baseline,” said Joe Heinzen, CEO and Founder of WorldSafe. “Executives need resilience
programs that are strategic, scalable, and defensible—not just reactive.”

When school safety isn’t about fear: How connections transform security
The WorldSafe team came across this brilliant article today in the news. It was so good we wanted to share it on our own news feed…
For nearly two decades as a school district superintendent, I believed school safety meant eliminating as many threats as possible. I, like most of my colleagues, dedicated budgets to metal detectors, surveillance cameras, and armed officers.
I hoped these investments would reassure families that our buildings were secure. Yet I kept hearing the same refrain from students, parents, and teachers: “We still do not feel safe.” It became clear that the old definition of safety as an “absence of fear” was not enough.
Each tragic event in our nation’s schools sparks a wave of renewed security spending. Districts tighten entrances, install more cameras and hire additional staff to patrol hallways. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, billions of dollars have flowed toward these measures over the past decade alone.

Tips from Upstanders Prevent Planned School Shooting in Florida
A 14-year-old suspect has been arrested after more than 40 tips about threatening social media messages were submitted to the National Crisis Center of the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System, a service of Sandy Hook Promise. The suspect is a student that had made threats online to commit a mass shooting at a school in Florida.
The National Crisis Center is the only national center dedicated to school-based anonymous reporting. Backed by the organization’s Say Something programming, which teaches youth and adults how to identify the warning signs of violence and get help, the crisis center has helped save countless lives nationwide through the prevention of school shootings, self-harm, and much more.
